Safe in the Water

In many villages in the south of Vietnam, children grow up next to rivers and canals, but a surprising number of them cannot swim. Every summer, when schools close and children spend more time outside, the danger of accidents in the water rises.

Three years ago, a group of teachers in Tra Vinh province decided to do something about it. They started a free programme called Safe in the Water, which teaches children aged seven to twelve to swim during the summer holidays. Because the villages do not have swimming pools, the lessons take place in a part of the river that is surrounded by a floating frame made of bamboo and plastic barrels.

The idea came from Ngo Tung, a PE teacher who learned to swim only when he was twenty. "I used to be afraid of the river," he says. "I don't want children to feel that fear."

Each course lasts two weeks, and the children have a one-hour lesson every morning. First they learn to float and to breathe correctly. After that, they learn to move forward. By the end of the course, every child must be able to swim twenty-five metres and stay above the water for one minute.

So far, more than eight hundred children have taken part. The teachers are not paid for their work, but local businesses have given money for life jackets and for the bamboo frames. Parents help too: some cook lunch for the teachers, and others watch the children from the riverbank.

The programme has been so successful that teachers in two other provinces have asked the team for advice. Mr Tung hopes that one day every child in the region will be taught to swim at school.

Review: The Clockmaker's Secret

I'm not usually a fan of puzzles, so when my friends booked an escape room for my eighteenth birthday, I wasn't very excited. I was wrong to worry. The Clockmaker's Secret, which opened in the city centre this spring, turned out to be one of the most enjoyable hours I've spent this year.

The idea is simple. A team of two to six players is locked in a room that looks like an old clockmaker's workshop, and you have sixty minutes to find the key and get out. There are clocks everywhere, of course, and most of the puzzles are connected to time in some way. Without giving too much away, I can say that you will need to look carefully at every object in the room, even the ones that seem useless.

What I liked most was that the puzzles needed different skills. My friend Isla is brilliant at numbers, so she solved the maths problems, while I was surprisingly good at noticing small details. Nobody felt left out. If you get stuck, you can ask for a clue by ringing a bell, but each clue adds two minutes to your final time.

There were a few problems. The room was quite dark, and we wasted about five minutes because we couldn't read a message that was written on the wall. Also, the price, 250,000 dong per person, is quite high for students, although it is cheaper on weekday mornings.

We escaped with just three minutes left, and the staff took a photo of us for their website. If you are planning a birthday or simply want to try something different with friends, I would definitely recommend it. Just don't go alone: it is designed for teams, and you would find it very hard on your own.

  1. Before the visit, the writer
    • was excited to try something new.
    • had chosen the room for the party.
    • had been to several escape rooms.
    • did not expect to enjoy it.
  2. What does the writer say about the puzzles?
    • Many of them are linked to the idea of time.
    • Most of them can be solved without looking around.
    • They are mainly maths problems for adults.
    • Some of them are too difficult for teenagers.
  3. Why does the writer mention Isla?
    • to explain why the team had to ask for a clue
    • to show that the maths puzzles were too easy
    • to explain who booked the room for the birthday
    • to show that each player could use a different skill
  4. What happens if a team asks for a clue?
    • They have to pay a little more money.
    • Their final time becomes longer.
    • A member of staff comes into the room.
    • They lose one of their sixty minutes.
  5. What problem did the team have?
    • The bell for clues did not work.
    • The staff gave them the wrong key.
    • They could not see a message clearly.
    • There was not enough space for six people.
  6. What does the writer say about the price?
    • It is lower at certain times.
    • It is fair for what you get.
    • It includes a photo for each player.
    • It is cheaper for larger teams.
  7. Who would the writer NOT recommend the room to?
    • groups who are celebrating a birthday
    • friends who want to try something different
    • people who want to play by themselves
    • people who have never done puzzles before

Finding My Voice, by Nhi, 16

Two years ago, I was the quietest student in my class. I knew the answers to most questions, but whenever a teacher asked me to speak in front of everyone, my face went red and my hands started shaking.

Things changed in grade ten, when our literature teacher, Ms Hong, gave every student a job for the school year. Mine was to read the class news every Monday morning. It only took three minutes, but before the first Monday I hardly slept.

Ms Hong gave me some advice that I still use. She told me to practise in front of a mirror first, and then in front of my family. She also said that nobody in the audience wants the speaker to fail. That idea helped me more than anything else.

My first reading was terrible. I spoke so fast that nobody understood the last part. But by October I was slowing down, and by the end of the year I had started adding jokes to the news.

Last month I gave a speech about our school library in front of three hundred students at the school assembly. I was still nervous, but I didn't let it stop me. My advice to shy students is simple: don't wait until you feel ready. Start with something small, and do it every week.

  2. What did Nhi have to read every Monday morning?
  3. How long did the reading take?
  4. Ms Hong told Nhi to practise first in front of ____.
