The Farm on the Roof

In many Asian cities, space is expensive, and green areas are disappearing as new buildings go up. But some people have found an unexpected place to grow food: the roof.

In Ho Chi Minh City, a group of young engineers started a rooftop farm on top of a school in 2021. Today, the farm produces about forty kilograms of vegetables every week. The vegetables are used in the school canteen, and anything left over is sold to parents at a low price. Students take turns looking after the plants as part of their science lessons.

The farm uses a system in which plants grow in water instead of soil. This makes the farm much lighter, which matters because many old roofs cannot carry heavy weights. The system also uses around seventy per cent less water than a normal garden, because the water goes round and round instead of disappearing into the ground.

Not everyone is happy, however. Some neighbours complained that the farm attracted birds, and the school had to put nets over the plants. The engineers admit that setting up a rooftop farm is expensive at first. The school's system cost around 200 million dong, and it took three years for the savings on food to cover that cost.

The group now hopes to build similar farms on hospitals and office buildings. "People think farming belongs in the countryside," says Tran Bao Ngoc, one of the founders. "But a city has thousands of empty roofs. Each one could feed someone."

Part 3: A review

Review: The Paper Crane

I have to admit that I didn't expect much from The Paper Crane. Hanoi already has hundreds of cafes, and another one with books on the walls didn't sound very exciting. But after three visits, I've changed my mind.

The first thing you notice is the silence. The owners, a retired teacher and her son, have one simple rule: no phone calls inside. If your phone rings, you have to take it out onto the balcony. At first this felt strange, but by my second visit I loved it. It's one of the few places in the Old Quarter where you can actually hear yourself think.

The books are not just decoration. There are about three thousand of them, in Vietnamese, English and French, and you can read any of them while you drink. If you finish a book you like, you can buy it, or you can swap it for a book you bring from home. The children's corner upstairs has cushions and picture books, which makes it popular with families at weekends.

The drinks menu is short. The coffee is good, though not the best in the area, and the cakes are made by a bakery down the street rather than in the cafe. Prices are a little higher than average, but nobody asks you to leave, even if you stay all afternoon with one cup.

My only real complaint is the stairs. The building is narrow and the stairs are steep, so it isn't easy for older visitors or anyone with a pushchair. The owners say they are looking for a way to solve this.

If you want a quiet place to read, work or simply escape the noise of the street, The Paper Crane is worth a visit. Just remember to switch your phone to silent.

    • It would be too expensive.
    • It would be too noisy.
    • It would be hard to find.
    • It probably wouldn't be special.
  2. What happens if a customer's phone rings?
    • They have to leave the cafe.
    • They have to pay extra.
    • They have to turn it off.
    • They have to answer it outside.
  3. What does the writer say about the books?
    • All the books are in Vietnamese.
    • Customers can exchange books.
    • Customers can borrow them and take them home.
    • They are only for decoration.
  4. Who often visits at weekends?
    • university students
    • retired teachers
    • families with children
    • tourists
  5. What does the writer say about the food and drink?

  6. What is the writer's main criticism?

My First Job, by Le Hoang Nam

Last summer, when I was seventeen, I got my first part-time job at a bubble tea shop near my school. I worked four evenings a week, from six until ten, and earned 25,000 dong an hour.

The first week was terrible. I mixed up orders, I dropped a whole tray of drinks, and I was so slow that the manager, Ms Kieu, had to help me every night. I almost gave up. But Ms Kieu told me that everyone finds the first week hard, and she gave me a small notebook. Every time I made a mistake, I wrote it down, and before each shift I read the list again.

By the end of the month I was one of the fastest workers in the shop. I also learned something I didn't expect: how to talk to strangers. I used to be very shy, but after serving hundreds of customers I found it much easier to start a conversation.

I saved most of my money and used it to buy a second-hand laptop for university. More importantly, the job taught me that being bad at something at the beginning is normal. If I had given up after the first week, I would never have found that out.

  1. How many evenings a week did Nam work?
  2. How much did Nam earn per hour, in dong?
  3. What did Nam drop in his first week?
