The Competition

Thu loved playing the dan bau, a traditional Vietnamese instrument with only one string. Every evening she practised for an hour while her grandfather listened. He was a musician when he was young, and he gave her advice.

In March, Thu's music school had a competition. Thu chose a slow, sad song that her grandfather wrote many years ago. On the day of the competition, she was very nervous. When she started playing, her hands were shaking and she made a mistake in the first minute. She stopped, closed her eyes and thought about her grandfather in his chair at home. Then she started again from the beginning.

Thu didn't win first prize. A boy who played the piano won. But at the end, one of the judges came to talk to her. "That song was beautiful," she said. "Who wrote it?" The next week, the judge visited Thu's house to meet her grandfather, and now Thu plays his songs at a concert every month.
